AFS Silk Front Wing

The AFS Silk is the front wing that put French foil engineering on the map. A monobloc construction front wing and fuselage moulded as a single carbon unit the Silk trades modularity for something more valuable in the water: an unbroken, hydrodynamically clean structure that communicates every subtlety of the swell directly to your feet. If you want to understand what a surf-tuned AFS foil feels like at its most pure, this is where you start.

Available in 850 cm and 1050 cm, the Silk is aimed squarely at wave riding and wingfoiling. Both sizes share an aspect ratio of 8.0 and are built from Ultra High Modulus (UHM) carbon, manufactured in France. The result is a wing that is light, exceptionally stiff, and responsive in a way that mid-range foils simply cannot match.

Who It’s For

The Silk suits intermediate to advanced foilers who prioritise feel and surf performance over all-round versatility. It excels in:

• Wave riding the 850 is a fast, precise tool for punchy beach break and powerful swells; the 1050 opens it up for softer, smaller surf
• Wing foiling both sizes work well in powered winging, with enough top end to stay comfortable in a wide wind range
• Surf foil / prone foil the monobloc structure gives exceptional sensitivity through turns and in the pocket of a wave

This is not a beginner’s wing. The Silk rewards riders who know how to load a rail and drive through a pump. If you’re after a more forgiving first foil, look at the Enduro or a complete AFS package.

Key Features

• Monobloc (fixed) construction wing and fuselage cast as one piece; maximises structural rigidity and eliminates connection flex
• AR 8.0 across both sizes mid-high aspect ratio balances glide and manoeuvrability; enough drive for pumping, enough tightness for carving
• UHM carbon throughout Ultra High Modulus carbon gives the stiffest possible response per gram of material; made in France
• Whale-inspired leading-edge tubercles biomimetic bumps along the entire leading edge reduce stall tendency, improve low-speed stability and help maintain control in choppy, aerated water
• Winglets at the tips reduce induced drag and complement the tubercle effect for cleaner flow at the extremities
• Available in 850 cm and 1050 cm a focused size range designed for performance, not compromise

On the Foil

The Silk 850 is a fast wing. It gets up early for its size, accelerates cleanly, and holds speed through the flat exactly what you need to chase down a section or thread a barrel. Turns are tight and direct; you feel the wing lock in rather than roll through. Pumping is efficient given the AR, and the wing keeps its composure when the water gets messy under the nose.

The 1050 is the more accessible of the two. It generates lift earlier, makes light-wind or lighter-rider sessions much more manageable, and opens up that smooth, glassy Silk feel to a wider range of conditions. Both sizes share the same low-drama character in transitions the monobloc structure means there are no soft spots in the feel, just a clean, consistent connection between the water and your board.

Compatibility & Setup

Important Fuselink system only. The AFS Silk is a monobloc wing: the front wing is moulded permanently to a Fuselink-format fuselage. It is not compatible with a standard US box plate mount or generic foil fuselages. To build a complete setup you will need:

• An AFS Fuselink-compatible mast (UHM, HM or HR aluminium options available from AFS)
• An AFS stabiliser (all current AFS stabs are compatible with the Fuselink fuselage)
• An AFS Fuselink mast-top plate and a foil-specific board with a compatible tuttle or deep-tuttle box (or plate track)

If you are coming from a different foil brand, check compatibility before purchasing. The Fuselink connection uses two M8 Torx bolts to clamp a precision-tapered socket joint the load transfer is through the carbon structure itself, not through fastener shear, which is why the connection feels so direct. It is not the same as a generic plate-mount system.

Note: the original Silk is a fixed mount the wing cannot be removed from the fuselage. If you want a demountable front wing (so you can swap sizes or pack the foil more compactly), look at the AFS Silk V2, which uses a removable mounting system.

Construction

AFS manufactures the Silk entirely in France from UHM (Ultra High Modulus) carbon fibre. The monobloc process eliminates the bolted joint between wing and fuselage that is present on modular designs instead, the aerodynamic surfaces flow continuously from tip to tail without interruption. This raises torsional stiffness, lowers weight, and removes a potential failure point. It also means the hydrodynamics are exactly as designed, with no variance between units caused by assembly tolerances.

Why We Stock It

We are a rider-owned shop on the Wirral and our team has foiled on a wide range of wings. The AFS Silk consistently comes up in conversation when riders ask what the best all-French, surf-focused foil actually feels like. The monobloc design is genuinely different not a marketing story, a tangible difference in how the wing communicates with the rider. We stock it because it is one of the few wings where the hype matches the ride.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does aspect ratio 8.0 actually mean for how it rides?

Aspect ratio (AR) is span squared divided by wing area. A higher AR means a longer, narrower wing that generates less induced drag and more glide at the cost of tighter turning radius and, sometimes, more sensitivity at low speed. AR 8.0 sits in the mid-high range: you get meaningful glide and efficient pumping, but the wing still carves tightly and does not feel like a race-tuned plank. It is the right balance for surf and wing foiling.

What is the AFS Fuselink system and is it compatible with my current foil?

Fuselink is AFS’s proprietary mast-to-fuselage connection. It uses a precision-tapered conical socket clamped by two M8 Torx bolts. The load transfers through the carbon structure, not the fasteners, giving a very stiff, low-drag joint. It is not compatible with standard US box plate mounts or competitor fuselage systems (Axis, Slingshot, Lift, etc.) without a specific adapter. You will need an AFS Fuselink mast to use this wing.

What is the difference between the original Silk and the Silk V2?

The original Silk is a monobloc unit the front wing is permanently bonded to the fuselage; they cannot be separated. It comes in two sizes (850 and 1050 cm) and has an aspect ratio of 8.0. The Silk V2 is a demountable design: the wing bolts onto the fuselage and can be swapped out. The V2 also raised the aspect ratio (AR 9), refined the tips and dihedral, added six sizes from 650 to 1150 cm, and improved glide. The original Silk is purer and arguably slightly more direct in feel; the V2 is more versatile and easier to travel with.

Is this suitable for a beginner?

No. The Silk is a performance wing for riders who already know how to foil and want to push into surf and wave riding. If you are learning, you will find it demanding at low speed and unforgiving if your body position is off. We would recommend starting on a larger, lower-AR wing and progressing to the Silk once you are comfortable pumping and linking small waves.

Which size should I choose 850 or 1050?

The 850 is the pick for riders above 75 kg riding in moderate to strong conditions, or lighter riders who want a fast, aggressive wave tool. The 1050 suits lighter riders (under 70 kg) or anyone who wants a bit more early lift useful in gutless surf or lighter wind winging. If you are between sizes and ride a mix of conditions, consider which end of the spectrum you spend more time in.

What materials is the Silk made from?

The Silk is manufactured in France using UHM (Ultra High Modulus) carbon fibre throughout the monobloc structure. UHM carbon has a higher modulus (stiffness per unit weight) than standard high-modulus or high-strength carbon, giving the wing maximum rigidity for minimum mass. There is no fibreglass in the structure.
